The Propaedeutics Course provides foundational preparation for applicants without a background in psychology or the human sciences. It introduces essential psychological and counselling concepts required for entry into professional psychotherapy training.

The programme is grounded in an integrative, relational, and developmental model of psychotherapy. It recognises the interaction between biological, emotional, cognitive, relational, and unconscious processes in psychological functioning. Training emphasises depth, clinical flexibility, and ethical responsibility, preparing future psychotherapists to work with complexity rather than relying on fixed techniques. Experiential learning, reflective practice, and the development of personal awareness form the core of the educational approach.

Basic Training takes place during the first three years and establishes foundational clinical and theoretical competencies. Trainees study core psychological processes, therapeutic relationship dynamics, and intervention principles while developing initial clinical skills.

Each module (20 hours) includes:

·      4 hours theoretical input

·      11–12 hours practical application

·      5 hours individual study

Emphasis is placed on translating theory into practice through structured exercises and clinical simulations.

Advanced Training occurs in Years 4 and 5 and focuses on applied clinical work with complex presentations across major diagnostic categories. Trainees develop skills in case formulation, treatment planning, and strategic intervention tailored to individual client needs.

Each module (20 hours) includes:

·      4 hours theoretical input

·      11–12 hours applied practice

·      5 hours individual study

This stage strengthens diagnostic reasoning and integrative clinical decision-making.

Personal development is a core professional requirement. Trainees explore their relational styles, emotional patterns, and personal dynamics as they relate to therapeutic work. The aim is professional self-awareness and emotional regulation, reducing the likelihood of countertransference interference.

Requirements include:

·      Minimum 35 hours of individual therapy

·      12 group personal development sessions

Supervision supports trainees as they begin direct clinical work. It provides structured reflection on cases, ethical dilemmas, therapeutic processes, and professional development.

·      Group supervision sessions: 15 hours each (online)

·      Minimum 300 client-contact hours required

·      Supervision protocols submitted for at least 10 cases covering varied clinical presentations

Additional individual supervision may be undertaken if needed.

INTERVISION / PEER SUPERVISION

Intervision is offered monthly online and is free of charge for ACCPI members. Sessions last 3–4 hours and provide collegial support for clinical questions or urgent professional reflection. Intervision complements but does not replace formal supervision. Meetings are announced monthly in the student communication group.
